Bitter defeat, but invaluable experience: Sokil vs Mriya match review

In the match of the 8th round of the Kyiv Region Championship, the guests from Gostomel, FC Mriya, met their always difficult opponent, Sokol. Despite the fact that our team opened the scoring at the end of the first half, the outcome of the match was finally determined only in extra time, when the opponent managed to make a dramatic comeback.

The battle at the start and the first half

The match began as a tactical encounter in which both teams sought to minimise risks. The opponent, in another attempt to improve their results after an unpleasant defeat in the 4th round of the National Championship, used a five-defender formation, a solution that had previously worked well in matches against other opponents, but was not so effective against us.

At the end of the first half, thanks to Vladyslav Zhavko, our team managed to break through the Sokol defence and open the scoring. This goal gave us hope and confidence, as we have always sought to dominate in our historic meetings with this opponent.

Second half and dramatic ending

In the second half, Sokil changed its tactics and stepped up its game. Although the main 90 minutes passed with minimal changes in the score, it was in the extra time that the opponent managed to change the course of the match.

In the 90+7th minute, Ovcharuk levelled the score, which gave Sokol a new impetus in the fight. Just three minutes after the game resumed, Al-Khalawani doubled the score after a cross, giving the opponent an important victory. This development came as a surprise to us and an extremely disappointing end to the match.

Conclusions and future plans

Although the result of this match is painful, we are confident that every game is an important lesson. We will analyse the mistakes we made, study the nuances of the opponent’s tactical decisions and work on improving the effectiveness of our next attacks.
